Brief Description

We are seeking an apprentice CNC Machinist to join our machine shop team to learn and develop while studying a level 3 engineering qualification at Sheffield College.

Training to be Provided

Machining Technician Apprenticeship Standard Level 3 delivered at Olive Grove Campus.

Future Prospects

At the end of the period, the apprentice will have gained a broad knowledge and understanding of the machining of forgings in various materials for the aerospace industry and a full-time role may be available.

The apprentice will learn to work to strict safety and quality requirements, help to achieve daily production requirements in terms of quality and quantity, optimising efficiency and maintaining operational excellence.


To gain a full working knowledge in all aspects of machining and be proficient in machining of forgings and tooling to specified drawings across both manual and CNC machining centres. The parts machined feed both the commercial and aerospace markets.


The key objectives of the role will be covered in the training, both on site and at the Sheffield College Training Centre.


Key Objectives:



  • Work in a safe and responsible manner. (For own and other people’s safety)

  • Comply with statutory, quality and organisational and health and safety regulations whilst carrying out machining practices

  • Conduct any pre-shift H&S checks as specified; for example: Crane, FLT, daily machine checks

  • Use and interpret a range of engineering data sources and supporting documentation

  • Machine components to drawing specifications, using a variety of manual and CNC machinery, primarily with Fanuc control

  • Minimise machinery downtime by conducting operator preventative maintenance

  • Use of basic hand tools

  • Use measuring equipment (Micrometres, Vernier, Wall Thickness Meter, Surface Roughness gauge)

  • Successfully complete FLT and overhead crane training and safely handle and manoeuvre heavy equipment and product

  • Meet challenging production targets

  • Flexibility to undertake varied tasks to deliver the production plan

  • Identify, where possible improvements in safety and quality

  • Promote and engage in production improvement activities

  • Exceptional time keeping and attendance

  • Ad hoc duties as required
