Brief Description

As an apprentice, you will learn how to inspect, service, maintain and repair a wide variety of vehicles, working alongside experienced HGV technicians and supervisors in a professional local authority workshop environment. 

Training to be Provided


  • Apprentices will develop their knowledge, skills and behaviours through on and off-the- job learning and are expected to attend a Paragon Skills Technical Centre on a day release basis

  • Apprentices will be certificated for the Apprenticeship after completion of an end-point assessment

Future Prospects


  • This standard has been designed to meet the professional standards of the relevant professional bodies of the Engineering Council for initial registration as an Engineering Technician (Eng. Tech). On completion of the standard the Engineering Technician will be eligible to apply for registration as an Engineering Technician with a relevant professional body

  • Although we can’t guarantee you a permanent job at the end of your apprenticeship, many apprentices remain with SCC following the completion of their apprenticeship. If there is not a permanent opportunity, we will support you to apply for other roles within the council, and help make sure you are ready for a wider job search with support from our Employment Support team

  • Assisting qualified technicians with the maintenance and repair of HGVs, vans, and plant

  • Learning safe working practices in a commercial vehicle workshop environment

  • Supporting routine inspections, servicing, MOT preparation and breakdown repairs

  • Developing fault finding and diagnostic skills on modern vehicles and systems

  • Maintaining accurate job cards and workshop records
    Working in line with health & safety, DVSA, and council policies and procedures

  • Attending college as part of your apprenticeship programme
