Brief Description
Ofi are looking for an Apprentice Laboratory Technician to be based at their Goole site. This is an exciting opportunity for those interested in a career in science. During the apprenticeship the successful applicant will receive practical and theoretical training in Lab techniques which will fully equip them for their future career.
Training to be Provided
At Tiro we are obsessed with changing lives through science and technology apprenticeships so we can’t wait to have you on board.
Over 36 months, you’ll devote a minimum of 6.5 hours of your working week on ‘off the job’ training. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spent writing assignments. The apprenticeship programme will be delivered remotely/ in the workplace - theory sessions delivered by the training provider on-line, the apprentice will undertake tasks/roles within the workplace to demonstrate skills, knowledge, and behaviours. This will be supported by an experienced mentor/supervisor/line manager.
You will also be supported by a dedicated learning coach/assessor who will guide and mentor you throughout your apprenticeship.
You will undertake the Level 6 Scientist programme, this consists of:
- Work safely in a laboratory, maintaining excellent housekeeping whilst following appropriate safety, environment, and risk management systems
- Follow quality procedures to meet the requirements of quality standards relevant to the workplace
- Prepare laboratory tasks using the appropriate scientific techniques, procedures, and methods
- Perform laboratory tasks following specified methodologies, such as Standard Operating Procedures
- Use of specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment, including calibration where required
- Produce reliable, accurate data and keep accurate records of laboratory work undertaken and results
- Analyse, interpret and evaluate data and identify results requiring further investigation seeking advice of senior colleagues as appropriate
- Communicate scientific information appropriately, including the use of laboratory information management systems, either digital or paper based
- Apply scientific techniques for data presentation, e.g., statistics
- Recognise problems and apply appropriate scientific methods to identify causes and achieve solutions
- Participate in continuous business performance improvement
- Successful achievement of the end-point assessment will lead to final certification of the apprenticeship
- Added value includes once qualified you’ll be eligible to join the Register of Science Technicians (RSciTech)

You will be working alongside a mentor in a small team and assist with the safe, efficient, and reliable laboratory operation.
The Apprentice Laboratory Technician will work with the operations team to test, collate, interpret, and report quality lab results in a timely manner, and to a high standard and in a safe way. You will develop the technical knowledge of scientific methods and techniques to accurately conduct and document laboratory tests and tasks.
You will learn to follow and conduct risk assessments, work safely in a laboratory, follow procedures, perform tasks, use specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment, record accurate data, interpret results, apply scientific techniques to present data, and understand the legal requirements for your industry, i.e., HASWA, COSHH, DSEAR.
Our goal is to work with you, developing your lab skills, so you become competent in various test methods and in operating key pieces of equipment.
