Brief Description
A hands-on, workshop based role where you would be expected to learn whilst on the job.
Working with a qualified mechanic with 40 years’ experience. Learning to develop skills in areas which interest you within a small family run business where we work together as a team.
Training to be Provided
- Day release, 1 day per week
- Castleford College, Thunderhead Ridge, Castleford, West Yorkshire. WF10 4UA.

Key Responsibilities
- Assist qualified technicians with the servicing, maintenance, and repair of HGVs and trailers.
- Carry out routine vehicle inspections and preventative maintenance in accordance with manufacturer and legal requirements.
- Learn to diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic faults using specialist diagnostic equipment.
- Replace and repair vehicle components including brakes, suspension, steering, engines, transmissions, and electrical systems.
- Assist with MOT preparation and ensure vehicles meet roadworthiness and safety standards.
- Complete job cards, inspection sheets, and service records accurately and promptly.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment, following all health and safety procedures.
- Learn and apply manufacturer specifications, workshop procedures, and DVSA standards.
- Use workshop tools and equipment safely and correctly.
Attend all apprenticeship training sessions, complete coursework and assessments, and maintain an up-to-date portfolio of evidence.
The HGV Technician Apprentice will work alongside experienced technicians to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to inspect, maintain, diagnose, and repair heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and trailers. The apprentice will complete an approved apprenticeship programme while gaining practical, hands-on experience in a commercial vehicle workshop.
The role combines structured workplace training with off-the-job learning, enabling the apprentice to build the technical skills and industry knowledge required to become a qualified HGV Technician.
