Brief Description

A Process Engineer Apprenticeship combines practical, on-the-job training with academic study to prepare individuals for a career in designing, developing, and improving industrial processes. Apprentices work alongside experienced engineers to learn how to make manufacturing systems more efficient, cost-effective/environmentally friendly.

Training to be Provided

A Process Engineer apprenticeship blends hands-on experience in the workplace with formal learning through college or university. The training is structured so apprentices build technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional behaviours step by step.
Most of the training happens in the workplace under the supervision of experienced engineers. Apprentices gradually take on more responsibility as they gain confidence and competence.

Typical workplace training includes:

  • Learning plant operations – understanding how systems, machinery, and production lines work.

  • Shadowing engineers – observing process design, testing, and improvement activities.

  • Assisting with troubleshooting – helping to solve real production problems.

  • Collecting and analysing data – measuring process efficiency, waste, and quality performance.

  • Participating in improvement projects – applying lean and continuous improvement methods.

  • Health, safety, and environmental compliance – learning to identify risks and follow procedures.

Future Prospects

After completion, apprentices can progress into roles such as Process Engineer, Production Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, or Project Engineer, and continue to chartered status.
