  • Working Week: Initially Monday - Thursday, 8.00am - 4.00pm. Friday, 8.00am - 3.00pm, with a half hour lunch break. However, once the apprenticeship is complete the individual will be expected to adopt our shift pattern of working.

Brief Description

Successful candidates can expect to work in a health and safety conscious environment having received full training to use a variety of tools and equipment. The role will cover all aspects involved in the process from turning raw steel coming in, to producing fabricated members ready to go to site for erection.

Training to be Provided

Formal training is delivered at HWGTA, located in Hereford (HR4 9SX)


Level 2 comprises of:


Duration approximately 18 months,


Block release training which includes 1 day per week in a classroom setting to cover practical and theory aspects working to complete the following qualifications:



  • EAL Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Operations (Skills)

  • EAL Level 2 Certificate in Engineering Operations (Knowledge)


You will receive monthly visits from your assigned Learning and Development Specialist, who will set you work, monitor your development and wellbeing, and discuss training sessions. They will also prepare you for your End Point Assessment.

  • Working safely in a busy environment

  • Checking material coming in against a Material List

  • Processing steel sections through state-of-the-art CNC machinery to achieve required lengths, holes and any additional profiling as well as shotblasting

  • Making fittings in the correct sequence to keep the workshop up to speed with site programmes and schedules

  • Fabrication of structural steel against CAD drawings

  • Welding of structural steel in line with welding procedures.

  • Painting protective coatings (Primer / Intumescent Fire Protective Paint)

  • Loading trailers in a safe and efficient manor for transport

  • Helping the Production Control Team with CNC Programming, material ordering & other areas to enable a smooth and efficient workshop flow
